Beautiful and lovely Tajikistan, stolen ear buds, and our windshield got smashed (April, May 2025)

We entered Tajikistan for the second time after we did the Pamir Highway in summer 2024 and found a camp spot at a lake in the first bigger town after the border to Uzbekistan.
Soon three kids joint us. Because of the language barrier, we exchanged only some basic communication. We played on my cajon and soon some more children joint us. So we had a whole gang around us. But it was fun.
After the children a younger couple came around and after them came the police.
The police officers were interested in Rosinante and our nomad life and the leader of the group could speak some German and gave us his phone number to call him if we need help or something else.
So for us meeting the police was fun. For the younger couple who came along before it was not so much fun because they had to pay a fine for “romantic behavior in public”. Different cultures, different rules…
We went into the mountains and took a pretty high mountain pass to get into north/ central Tajikistan.
Finding a camp spot was not so easy that time. It took us about two hours of searching. But in the process we got in contact with a lot of villagers and finally we found a spot with a nice view.
On our hike we found interesting alien plant.
And this crazy happy puppy who pissed herself so happy she was to see us. It was a really crazy and absolutely cute on.
After following us for a while her parents persuaded her to join them again. It was pretty funny.

Our next destination was Dushanbe. It was a nice and slow paced city. We liked it.
I think this photo looks like it could be from the 70s or 80s. Because of the old bus.
We did some sight seeing, went to a restaurant for dinner and enjoyed some city life stuff.
After trying two iOverlander camp spots, we found our own one. This one was pretty wired and located in a small area that got used for parking and dumping building materials and trash.
But it was pretty green and mostly silent.
The traffic lights in Tajikistan make the impossible possible: green and red at the same time.
They seemed to like it.
Racki’s macrame skills reached a professional level and she got super fast and enjoyed it a lot.
I got my own custom made bracelet with alien eyes!
And we started to give the locals bracelets as presents when we spent more time with them or they had gifted us something.
They all loved the bracelets.
After climbing for a couple of days (you can read about it in this post), we found another nice spot at a river and went for a waterfall hike.
We only took our “hiking flip flops” and soon our tour escalated into some climbing. Like always.
I would always recommend to take proper shoes and hiking poles on every hike in the stan countries because you really never know what will happen.
The waterfall was amazing! We guessed it was about 60 meters high.

We continued our way on the ordinary Tajik roads.
And found a nice spot at a big reservoir and had some chilled days.
Soon we got two new dog friends. Racki played a lot with them and we cooked a big portion of rice with dog food for them because they looked quite hungry.
They were barking all night but fortunately not right next to Rosinante but a couple of hundred meters away.
We continued our way and found a nice spot in the greens close to a small town.
Soon everyone in the town seem to know that someone interesting had arrived and so we met a whole lot of locals.
Especially the kids were very interested and sometimes just sit in front of us and examined what we were doing for hours.
We played with the cajon, fixed a bike, and mostly had fun with them.
Some of the locals spoke a bit of German and some a bit of English.
Especially one young man impressed us: Abudakha. He had been learning English a lot and loved to talk and practice with us. We talked a lot about the differences of Tajik and German culture and life and learned a lot.
On May the 4th we did the Wings For Life Run. Last year, we did it in Armenia and this time we run through the hills and farming area of Tajikistan with our friend Abudakha.
Another evening Abudakha showed us the local museum and recreation site and explained a lot of the historical stuff there.
After coming back home to Rosinante, I realized that my ear buds were missing. I searched everything more than once but could not find there. I got pissed and suspected the kids with whom we had spend some time before.
The next day some of the kids came visiting us again but trying to ask them about the ear buds did not work.
Later Abudakha came around and I asked him to ask the kids if they know who took the ear buds.
They knew something and quickly went off. Half an hour later they came back with my ear buds. They had got them from two of the kids who had been around the day before.
I was super happy that I got my ear buds back. Not only because I felt stupid that I had let some kids steal my stuff, but because getting these special ear buds in the stan countries would have been pretty much impossible.
We left Abudakha and the village and went to a place they had recommended us. It was a beautiful place!
The translation of its name was something like “40 girls” and witch that the absolutely beautiful stone formations are meant.
We took a nice hike around the main rocks and they were astonishing from all sites.
I’d say it was one of the most beautiful hikes. See it on Komoot.
And our camp spot was very nice as well.
And as always the locals tried to go as far as they could with there cars, regardless the scratching, rubber and clutch smell.
The situation at the border between India and Pakistan escalated and so we were stuck in the stans. Nobody was allowed to cross the border between Pakistan and India and there were fights going on in the border area.
So we decided not to go to Afghanistan and then to Pakistan and India.
After evaluating some options, we decided to stay in the stans for a couple of weeks and check how the border situation would develop.
So we went to visit the small town of Kulob. Again I liked the old stuff the most. Like this small fairy wheel.
And of course the president’s photos were everywhere. Most likely he is the politician I’d recognize the easiest.
On the way to Uzbekistan, we parked near some fields and a small canal. Everything was like always. Some locals passed by, we greeted each other, had a short talk etc.
But later in the night, this changed. Around two in the morning someone was shaking Rosinante and started laughing. We woke up but thought that some kids were just pranking us. But a couple of minutes later, we got woken up by a loud smash and noise.
We went outside with our head lights and checked the situation. We did not find anybody but we found our windshield smashed. It was not just a crack like from a small stone while driving. It was broken by a real heavy impact. And what is more, Rosinante’s hood was damaged as well.
We were shocked and started searching for someone who did it further away from Rosinante, but we could not find anybody. We did not even find a stone or something that could have done that damage…
So we decided to leave that place immediately because I could not have continued sleeping there and we did not want that who or whatever had damaged Rosinante, would damage her even more.
And we were not feeling good about this situation. In over three years of traveling never something like that had happened. Not even something that came close. We were meeting barely unfriendly people not to say any hostile ones…
So we packed and went off to another place in the direction of Dushanbe because we could not think of another place nearby where we could get a new windshield.
The next morning, we researched for a mechanic in Dushanbe on Google Maps and iOverlander. We found a promising one and started messaging on Whats App. He could speak German and English and so the communication was easy. We made an appointment for the next day.
At our nice green camp spot in Dushanbe, we met nice and lovely family who gifted us food. Racki gave them some of her beautiful bracelets in return.
Unfortunately I got a heavy diarrhea in the evening. Most of the night I spent shitting and in the morning, I even had to puke. I didn’t know what caused it, but I was pretty much fucked.
But we needed to go to the mechanic because we had only two visa days left in Tajikistan and we did not know if the repair would run smoothly. And what is more the area where we wanted to go in Uzbekistan looked pretty rural on the maps and so there was very little hope to find a new windshield over there.
At the mechanic I was barely surviving. But Racki talked to the mechanics and managed everything. They were super nice and we felt very good about what they would do.
We briefly searched for the reason of a squeaking noise we had in the front of Rosinante, but I felt to tired and weak to investigate it thoroughly. And so we left into the direction of Uzbekistan once the windshield got repaired.

Special: Rock climbing area “Varzob” in Tajikistan (April 2025)

With some research, we had found this rock/ sport climbing area in Vazob, Tajikistan. And from that point on, it had been clear, that we wanted to visit it.
The crag looked amazing!
And the scenery was fantastic!
It took some time from the road and our camp spot to reach the climbing area, but it was absolutely worth it.
And of course there were always some donkey friends to meet on the path.
The rock was located in pure nature and we loved climbing there.
Although the routes were sometimes pretty adventurous and it was often not obvious which anchor points we should use in the multi pitches.
So everything was a bit experimental and we would not recommend this area for beginners.
We managed to climb four routes.
This one here is the toughest one on that crag.
The overhanging is completely part of the route 🤣

With the multi pitches, it’s possible to reach the 110 m high top of the crag.
Some equipment in the wall was not in its best shape. The left bolt got completely destroyed. It’s hard to see on the photo. But we found ways to keep everything save.
We climbed for a couple of days and stashed our climbing gear next to the rock to not have to carry it on the 30 to 45 minutes approach every day.
And our camp spot was pretty special as well. Close to the main road but even closer to a big river so that the sound of the river was louder than the road.
Every evening some children from the next village came visiting us and gifted us food. After the first day we already had to much, but they wouldn’t have left without a successful delivery.
In return we gave them some chocolate and some of Racki’s awesome hand-made bracelets.

The Pamir Highway Part 2: Fuel, disaster, people and views, views, views (August, September 2024)

In the Bartang Valley other travelers reported that the road from Dushanbe into the Pamir area were pretty much under construction and that there were hours of waiting times to be expected. So we decided that we would take a loop and return to Kyrgyzstan.
From the western exit of the Bartang Valley, we continued our journey on the Pamir Highway and the valleys of that region.
Diesel in good quality became a rarity and so we took some out of Rosinante’s auxiliary tank and transferred it into Otto. The alternative was to buy some diesel from a guy with a old bucket full of diesel. The roads developed into a mixture of tarmac, concrete, gravel and dirt.
In Khorugh, one of the few bigger settlements in that region, we organized some stuff. It was not so easy to get certain things but as always it was interesting to discover a new place.
Otto’s exhaust pipe got welded and looked good again.
A screw had been broken off in a thread in the bracket of Rosinante’s underbody armor and we tried to remove it because the armor plates made crazy rattling noises on some frequencies of eroded tracks. I only wanted to use the lift and cordless drill of a mechanic because our had broken. But communication was difficult and so the mechanic tried to fix it. He broke the thread out of the bracket. I was pretty pissed but did not got mad with the guy. So it was cable ties again.
We went further south along the river separating Tajikistan from Afghanistan. It was interesting to be there and see Afghanistan and the Afghan people on the other side of the river. I guess mainly because of the news reports, I have a biased attitude towards Afghanistan and it was interesting to feel that.
We had to pass several military checkpoints and one soldier tried to get money from Simon for having the horns Racki had gifted him. But all went good. At one camp spot we got moved by the soldiers patrolling the river. It was not so easy to find camp spots and I would recommend everyone to just skip the border area where you are not able to keep at least a kilometer of distance to the river. We had some windy days and took the opportunity to play around with our kite. The local children loved it as well and I thought about gifting the kite to them. But in the end I kept it.
We visited the Afghan Market, a market for Afghan and Tajik people in the middle of the big river separating the countries. It was a nice visit, we tried the barbeque and had our first contact with people from Afghanistan who were all very friendly. And for me especially the men had a special look. Taking photos was not allowed on the market.
After some hiking, we visited a museum where a elderly and absolutely motivated man showed and explained a lot to us. We’re not so much into museums, but this one was pretty fun.
We wanted to visit an ancient Buddhist temple and a local kid took the opportunity to get some money by leading us there. Because he was a fun guy, he became our little guide. It was not much left of the temple, though.
The views along the river were very interesting.
And changing.
I liked the old school patterns of fields. The local farmers did not use machines and did all by hand and with the help of donkeys, horses and cows.
This was my favorite camp spot on the Pamir. It was a pretty tough dirt road with stones and steps to get up there but once we reached that place, it was beautiful!
We asked the surrounding farmers if we could stay for a couple of days and they were very fine with that. I think they liked having us there because I guess not so many tourists come up to that place. So we helped a bit with their manual farm work, had little chats via google translate and enjoyed the place.

One day we did an awesome hike up along the river.

I had thought the gravel mountains would be pretty boring very fast, but they did not.
Next we went east and the track got super crazy. It was the most eroded track we ever took and the waves were very deep. There were two ways to go: slower than 5 km/h or at least 70 km/h. So accelerating until 70 was a very, very shaky experience. Sometimes we had the feeling that Rosinante would fell apart. Simon had the same with Otto. But the cars made it through that as well.
Near Murghab, the other big settlement on the Pamir, we visited some ancient paintings.
And a absolutely stormy old observatory. The wind was so strong that we could lean into it. But staying there with Rosinante was not an option and so we went down from the hill to a river.
I loved the Yaks! They look so cool! We shared a camp spot with them. They were mostly eating and we rearranged the fuel pump for our diesel heater because it stopped working. After the rearrangement everything was fine again.
The ways the locals are transporting stuff and animals are adventurous. After some years of traveling, cows and horses on small transporters became pretty common. Although it got a place in the sun, this sheep seemed to be not so happy tied to the roof rack of one of the offroad taxis.
Most of the cars on the secondary roads/ tracks were some kind of offroad cars. Mostly Land Cruisers. And that’s a pretty strong statement on the road/ track conditions. When even the locals don’t go with the ordinary cars, it’s a pretty strong indicator for the conditions.
But the main roads, which we did not take so much were pretty good. Deep, deep potholes and some pretty broken sections, but absolutely driveable with all cars.
In Murghab, we met a horde of local children who got a bit annoying from time to time. But it was still a nice encounter. We played again with our kite and made some jokes.
And we met an interesting group of other travelers. Some traveling with a van, some with a car and some back packing. We had a chat, borrowed them some US Dollar (because the bank in Murghab does not exchange Euro) and talked about the way laying ahead to Kyrgyzstan. We told them about the pretty though part between the borders and promised that we would tow their van over this tricky part if it would be necessary. So we made up a day on which we would all cross the border together.
This is the main shopping place in Murghab.
Very different from Western European towns.
But always friendly and interesting. We found fresh fruits, cheese,
and Yak milk ice cream!
After Murghab we entered another area off the main road.

After a nice hike and some days, we continued our way to the highest point of our Pamir adventure: 4500 meters. The cars did everything very well and we had a nice view.
On our way back to Kyrgyzstan, we wanted to stay again on the beautiful camp spot next to the big lake which we had used on our first day of the Pamir as well. On the way there, Simon wanted to find his sunglasses which he had lost some weeks ago on the dirt road. So we separated but agreed on meeting on a specific location.
At some point Rosinante’s warning indicator for the diesel filter turned on. First it was a bit of a shock because we where in the middle of nowhere when it happened. But after a look in the manual we pumped some diesel through the filter to check if it would be necessary to install our spare filter. After the filter incident, we thought that Simon may have missed us and so we drove to the place where he wanted to search for his sunglasses. We could not find him and after a lot of searching, we continued to the camp spot at the lake.

Only after hours of looking for us Simon arrived at the camp spot as well. A pretty big fuck up. We could not imagine how we could have missed each other. But without any signal searching for each other seemed not to be an option as well.
We met again with a nice couple from Germany we had met earlier on the Pamir and had a good time together.
They told us that they had seen a big offroad camper truck that rolled down a very steep and long gravel slope and crashed into rocks. They showed us photos and we could not imagine how it could ever recovered from were it was laying now.
The same truck we had seen a couple of days before having fun of an offroad track and enjoying the Pamir.
Sometimes joy and disaster were just a hair’s breadth apart on the Pamir.
The border crossing back to Kyrgyzstan went very well. At the border a young soldier wanted to earn some extra money but we declined that.
When we reached the Kyrgyz border, the other travelers, whom we have met in Murghab, were already there. The most tricky part of the road between the borders had been improved to a degree that passing it slowly with a van and an ordinary car was possible when it was not raining.
Back in Osh, we were craving for stuff we could not get in the last weeks on the Pamir: pizza and cake!
A super nice final of our Pamir adventure.
This trip was absolutely amazing. I’ve never been before in an area like the Pamir. The remoteness, the nature, the views, the people, experiencing the so different way how they were living, and the offroad tracks made it a awesome and unique trip.
