2. Hosting and Content Delivery Networks (CDN)

Cloudflare & Cloudflare R2 Storage

We host the content of our website with our service provider Cloudflare, Inc. (101 Townsend St., San Francisco, CA 94107, USA) and deliver media files (images) via Cloudflare R2 storage systems.

When you access our pages, requests are routed through Cloudflare’s servers. During this process, connection data (such as your IP address, browser type, operating system, referring URL, and the date/time of the access) is processed. This is technically necessary to secure data traffic, defend against attacks (like DDoS attacks), and optimize image loading times globally.

Legal Basis: The use of Cloudflare and Cloudflare R2 is based on Art. 6 (1) (f) GDPR. We have a legitimate interest in providing a secure, error-free, and fast online service.

Data Transfer to Third Countries:Cloudflare uses EU Commission Standard Contractual Clauses to guarantee an adequate level of data protection when data is processed in the USA.

Web Analytics

This blog utilizes Cloudflare Web Analytics to monitor performance data and overall visitor traffic volume. The processing of operational site traffic details operates entirely without the placement of client-side cookies or browser storage variables. This service does not deploy visitor fingerprinting methods or track persistent individual web histories. Raw user IP addresses and data payloads are truncated, processed, and evaluated anonymously inside Cloudflare’s network infrastructure. Data collection and processing functions are conducted exclusively to fulfill our legitimate interest in maintaining an optimized, secure, and performant web platform.

3. Third-Party Integrations and Plugins

Embedded YouTube videos (enhanced privacy mode)

We embed YouTube videos and shorts on our website. The operator of these services is Google Ireland Limited (Gordon House, Barrow Street, Dublin 4, Ireland).

We use YouTube in enhanced privacy mode (via the domain youtube-nocookie.com). This ensures that YouTube does not store cookies or user profiles on your device as long as you do not actively play the video. Only when you click the video and start playback will your IP address be transmitted to YouTube servers, initiating data processing loops beyond our control.

egal Basis: The loading of video player resources and the associated data transfer during playback is based on your explicit consent pursuant to Art. 6 (1) (a) GDPR.

Our travel posts do not contain live interactive tracking maps. Instead, we display static visual screenshots of our route configurations which act as standard image hyperlinks leading out to the external Google Maps engine (Google Ireland Limited, Gordon House, Barrow Street, Dublin 4, Ireland).

Because these are flat, local graphics hosted on our R2 storage, zero script assets or cookies are fetched from Google when you load a post. A network connection and data transfer to Google’s servers in the United States only occurs if you choose to click on the map graphic to load the route externally inside a new tab. Once you click away, the data processing rules fall entirely under Google’s separate privacy conditions.

Legal Basis: The routing of external hyperlinks is based on Art. 6 (1) (f) GDPR. We have a legitimate interest in offering our readers a seamless way to view our actual travel routes on an established external mapping system if they choose to do so.

Email notifications about new posts

You can subscribe to email notifications about new posts.

Service Provider: We use Google Sheets to store email addresses and corresponding subscription status. We use make.com to build up a email recipient list and resend.com to send mails to the recipients.

Legal Basis: This data processing is based on your explicit consent pursuant to Art. 6 (1) (a) GDPR, which you provide by sending “subscribe” to [email protected] and confirming your subscription after we had asked for your confirmation (double opt-in).

Right to withdraw & unsubscribe: You can cancel your subscription at any time without providing a reason. To do so, simply send “unsubscribe” to [email protected]. Your email address will then be deleted from the active distribution index.
